Hiccup, a brave and tender-hearted boy worthy of his name, joined Love From Louie in 2025 on what felt like a desperate quest for life. He had been hit by a car and left unclaimed, and his situation was so reminiscent of Louie’s story that Laura could not unsee him. So, Love From Louie brought him home from Animal Control in Flint and immediately connected with their local veterinarian for a quality-of-life assessment, pain management, and a surgical plan.

Hiccup’s injuries were heartbreaking. He had a shattered shoulder on one side, a broken leg on the other, and a broken neck, though he still had feeling and movement in his tail and back legs. His shattered shoulder meant he was expected to lose that leg, just like the Viking he was named after.

But even on the worst days, Hiccup’s will to live never wavered. He ate a meal, wagged his tail every single time someone spoke to him, and gave out kisses. He was one very special dog, and he showed Love From Louie exactly what it meant to keep fighting for a chance.

Sweet Howie was about two years old when he came to Love From Louie from the Detroit area. He had been found as a stray on the streets with a dislocated hip that had been out for a while, leaving him in pain and in need of more help than the shelter was able to provide.

We stepped in to give Howie the care he needed. He received pain management and had FHO surgery to save his leg, which made his story especially meaningful to the organization. Louie, the namesake of Love From Louie, was actually the first dog we helped through FHO surgery!

During his time with us, we also discovered that Howie was deaf. But Howie’s story was not defined by the hard things he had endured. It became the story of a dog with a fresh start, an entirely new life, and the chance to move completely past the ugly things behind him!

Kash came to Love From Louie after he was found in the weeds, in the rain, with a broken pelvis. The days leading up to his arrival had been a whirlwind of unfamiliar surroundings, unfamiliar faces, and discomfort. By the time he finally settled in, he had already been through so much.

Kash needed at least six weeks of kennel rest, which meant a lot of patience, a lot of care, and a lot of pee pads. He also needed relief from the giant clumps of matted fur that had made him chronically uncomfortable. While he was under anesthesia to be shaved, he finally got the chance to feel a little more comfortable in his own body.

Once he was safe, Kash showed everyone what a champ he was. He had a great appetite, loved sleeping in his cozy space, and took his pain medication like a pro. With help from Love From Louie and the veterinary team at Blackman Animal Clinic, Kash began the fresh start he deserved.

Diesel had a real Cinderella story. His rescue began when Laura received a call about a person harming his dog’s eight-week-old puppies by throwing them against the side of a brick house. She grabbed all the lesson money cash she had in the barn and left immediately.

She did not make it in time to save them all. But she bought the puppies she could, and three of them survived.

Diesel was one of the boys who made it. He went on to have a long, beautiful life, which was exactly what every rescued dog deserved. He was deeply loved, and he was missed.

Dusty’s story asked a question that sat at the heart of rescue work: what bar did a dog have to clear to deserve a chance to live? For Dusty, the answer felt obvious. He was sweet, funny, lovable, housebroken, social, and always ready for cuddling and TV watching.

Dusty came to Love From Louie with an untreated ear issue that had become an infection and led to an eardrum rupture. Because of that, he was expected to lose his left ear. But Dusty was so much more than the medical problem he carried. He was a lovable dog with a big personality, and he deserved the chance to be cared for, comforted, and loved.

Love From Louie took in Itty Bitty and her three brand-new babies on New Year’s Eve. Their healing room was the perfect quiet space for her to nurture her three little boys, giving this young mama the safety, comfort, and peace she needed to care for them.

In the blink of an eye, her puppies were old enough to start new lives with their own loving families. It was the kind of beginning every dog deserved, but one Itty Bitty had never experienced for herself. Once her babies were ready, Bitty was spayed and vaccinated, and after she recovered from surgery, she was sent to friend and trainer Michelle Friedman.

Michelle’s training and socialization helped bring this sweet girl to a milestone moment in her young life: her very own family. There was nothing quick or inexpensive about saving a girl like Itty Bitty. It required time, resources, patience, and finally, a lifetime commitment from rescue-savvy adopters who understood what she needed. This is rescue!

Fishy’s story began with a tragic set of circumstances. He had been left on the side of the road in a crate, malnourished, infested with parasites, and completely paralyzed in his back end. Thanks to Oakland County Animal Shelter, Fishy was able to move on from that moment and into the care he needed!

When Fishy first came to Love From Louie, he had to be shaved down because he was badly matted, infested with fleas, and covered with ulcerated sores. He was neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, and after a veterinary consultation focused on the best possible management and hygiene for his needs, the decision was made to have his tail docked. Because Fishy was completely paralyzed in the back but still very active, having his tail short allowed his bum to be fully covered and protected by a baby diaper.

Fishy made a great recovery, and showed everyone exactly how much love of life he had. He is happy, funny, and loves extra snuggles. At under five years old and only nine pounds, this sweet boy has already endured so much, and he was more than deserving of his very own home!

Momo joined us as as an owner surrender. She was a five-year-old purebred Pembroke Corgi, and up until the time she arrived, she had never seen a veterinarian. Her human had experienced some rough living, and as a result, so had Momo.

With Love From Louie, Momo finally received the basic care every dog deserves. She was spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped, giving her a healthier and safer foundation for her next chapter!
